Bringing a new kitten home is exciting, but the first few weeks set the tone for their whole life with you. A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth transition.
Kitten-proofing your home
Kittens are curious and will investigate everything. Secure loose wires, remove small objects they could swallow, and check that any toxic houseplants (lilies are particularly dangerous to cats) are out of reach or removed entirely.
Settling in
Start your kitten in one smaller room with their litter tray, food, water, and a cosy bed, rather than giving them the run of the whole house immediately. This gives them a secure base and makes house-training easier, and you can gradually expand their access as they settle.
Feeding
Kittens need a diet specifically formulated for growth – regular adult cat food doesn’t provide the right balance of nutrients for a growing kitten. Follow the feeding guidelines on a quality kitten food, adjusting for your kitten’s individual appetite and growth.
Litter training
Most kittens take to a litter tray quickly with minimal training needed – place them in the tray after meals and naps, and keep the tray in a quiet, accessible location away from their food and water.
Vet visits and vaccinations
Book an early vet visit for a general health check and to start (or continue) their vaccination schedule. This is also a good opportunity to discuss microchipping, neutering timelines, and flea/worm treatment with your vet.
