Small parrots: budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds

These are the realistic starting point for most first-time owners. Smaller footprint, more modest noise levels, and generally more forgiving of a less-than-perfect setup while you learn. Lifespans still run into the years to low double-digits depending on species and care, so this is a genuine commitment, not a short-term pet.

Medium parrots: conures, quakers, senegals

More personality, more noise, and more specific enrichment needs than the small species. Conures in particular are known for being loud for their size. These birds are intelligent enough to get bored easily, and a bored parrot is often a destructive or noisy one – daily interaction and toys aren’t optional extras.

Large parrots: African greys, amazons, cockatoos, macaws

These are serious, decades-long commitments requiring significant space, daily enrichment, and often a genuinely loud voice that isn’t suited to every home. Large parrots are highly intelligent and can develop behavioural problems – feather plucking, aggression, screaming – if their needs aren’t met. Some larger and rarer parrot species may also be subject to CITES/EU Wildlife Trade Regulation controls, so documentation can be a genuine factor in a purchase – always ask the seller directly if you’re unsure.

• Can I commit daily time for interaction and enrichment, not just feeding?
