Setting Up Your First Shrimp Tank: A Beginner’s Guide

Ornamental shrimp – cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp, and their many colour varieties – have become one of the most popular entry points into the freshwater hobby in Ireland. They’re small, fascinating to watch, and genuinely low-maintenance once the tank is set up correctly. Getting that initial setup right matters more with shrimp than with most fish, since they’re more sensitive to water chemistry swings.

Tank size

A common myth is that shrimp need almost no space. In reality, a small volume of water is more prone to sudden swings in temperature and chemistry, which shrimp tolerate poorly. A tank of at least 20-30 litres is a much safer starting point than anything tiny.

Cycling before you add shrimp

Never add shrimp to a brand-new, uncycled tank. The nitrogen cycle – where beneficial bacteria establish themselves to process waste – typically takes several weeks. Adding livestock too early is one of the most common causes of early shrimp losses. Test your water and wait for stable, safe readings before adding any animals.

Substrate and water parameters

Many shrimp keepers use a specialised active substrate that helps buffer pH into the slightly acidic to neutral range many shrimp species prefer, though this depends on the specific species you’re keeping – some, like cherry shrimp, are more adaptable than others. Stable GH and KH (general and carbonate hardness) matter as much as pH itself; shrimp are more sensitive to sudden swings than to the exact number.

Feeding and tank mates

Shrimp are largely scavengers and will graze on biofilm and algae, supplemented with a small amount of dedicated shrimp food a few times a week – overfeeding is a much bigger risk than underfeeding. Be cautious about tank mates: many common community fish will happily eat small or baby shrimp, so a dedicated shrimp-only tank is the safest option for a beginner.
