Budgie Care Guide: Everything a First-Time Owner Needs to Know

Budgerigars (budgies) are one of the most popular first birds in Ireland, and for good reason: they’re intelligent, sociable, and don’t need the space a larger parrot does. But “easy” doesn’t mean “no effort” – a healthy, happy budgie needs the right setup from day one.

Cage size and setup

Bigger is always better with budgies – they’re active fliers, not just perch-sitters. Aim for the largest cage your space and budget allow, with horizontal bars (budgies climb sideways more than they climb up) and bar spacing no wider than about 1.2cm so a curious head can’t get stuck. Include several perches of different diameters to exercise their feet, and position the cage away from direct sun, draughts, and kitchen fumes (non-stick cookware fumes are genuinely dangerous to birds).

Diet

A seed-only diet is one of the most common mistakes new owners make. Budgies need a base of good-quality seed or pellet mix, supplemented daily with fresh vegetables (leafy greens, carrot, broccoli) and occasional fruit. Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and onion are toxic to birds and should never be offered.

Company and daily needs

Budgies are flock animals. A single budgie kept without much human interaction can become bored or stressed – either commit to daily out-of-cage time and interaction, or consider keeping a bonded pair. Fresh water daily, a consistent light/dark cycle (around 10-12 hours of darkness for sleep), and regular gentle handling from a young age will help you end up with a confident, tame bird rather than a nervous one.

Buying your first budgie in Ireland

When you’re ready, look for a seller who can tell you the bird’s approximate age, whether it’s been handled, and where it came from. A responsive, active budgie with clean feathers, clear eyes, and normal droppings is a good sign. You can browse budgies and other birds for sale in Ireland on The Aviary Hub to compare listings from sellers around the country.
