CO2 injection is one of the more intimidating topics for aquarists moving into planted tanks – it sounds technical, and it can be, but it isn’t required for every planted setup. Here’s how to think about whether you actually need it.
Why plants might need supplemental CO2
Aquatic plants use CO2 for photosynthesis, the same as land plants use atmospheric CO2. In a low-tech planted tank, plants rely on the CO2 naturally dissolved in the water and produced by fish and bacteria, which is enough for many easier, slower-growing plant species. Under stronger lighting, however, plants photosynthesise faster and can outstrip the naturally available CO2, leading to stunted growth or algae problems as the tank falls out of balance.
When CO2 injection genuinely helps
If you’re running higher-intensity lighting, growing demanding, fast-growing, or carpeting plant species, or aiming for a lush, competition-style aquascape, supplemental CO2 is often the difference between plants merely surviving and plants actually thriving.
When you can skip it
A tank with lower lighting and hardier, slower-growing plant species (many ferns, mosses, and anubias, for example) can do well without any CO2 system at all – a genuinely lower-maintenance, lower-cost route into planted tanks.
Getting started with CO2
If you do decide to add CO2, matching your lighting intensity and CO2 delivery is important – too much CO2 too fast is stressful and potentially dangerous for fish, so a drop checker or reliable monitoring approach is worth using alongside any new system.
